AC Milan and Bologna reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup with convincing victories

MILAN (AP) — AC Milan and Bologna advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup with convincing victories on Tuesday.

Milan beat Serie B leaders Sassuolo 6-1, while Bologna defeated Serie A runners-up Monza 4-0.

The Rossoneri will face either Roma or Sampdoria in the quarter-finals. Bologna plays against the winner of Atalanta against Cesena.

Both round of 16 games will take place next week.

Tuesday’s game at the San Siro was all but over after less than 23 minutes as Sassuolo were overwhelmed by a brace from Samuel Chukwueze and further goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leão.

Ahead of Friday’s tough Serie A game against Atalanta, Milan had a heavily altered starting lineup and the Rossoneri made four more changes at half-time.

Nevertheless, Milan continued to extend their lead through Davide Calabria and Tammy Abraham, with Samuele Mulattieri scoring a consolation goal for Sassuolo on both sides.

Bologna scored two goals in each half, with Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini scoring in the first period and Benjamín Domínguez and Santiago Castro in the second period.

However, Orsolini limped off the pitch shortly after his goal and Bologna will now have to wait anxiously to find out the extent of his injury. The Italian striker is Bologna’s top scorer this season with six goals.
