According to media reports, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could announce his resignation within days.

He is considering stepping down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party, which would also mean the end of his nine-year term as prime minister.

Last month, his finance minister resigned, citing policy differences such as how to handle Donald Trump’s threat to impose U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.

Trudeau’s popularity has also plummeted among voters. Polls suggest his party is on track for defeat in general elections this year.

The Globe and Mail reports this He could announce his intention to quit before his party meeting on Wednesday to avoid the impression that his own MPs have forced him to leave.

Their sources said it was unclear whether Trudeau would leave immediately or remain prime minister until a new leader is elected.

And they emphasized that he has not yet made a final decision about his future.

Whoever takes power will have to lead the party through an election campaign while also managing a potential trade war with the United States.

The election must take place before October, but a change in the leadership of the Liberal Party could lead to more calls for an early vote in the coming months.

Trudeau’s departure would end a pivotal era in Canadian politics.

He unexpectedly brought his party to power in 2015, winning a campaign that began with a third-place finish.

The then 43-year-old fresh-faced young politician promised a new kind of politics that would focus on open immigration policies, higher taxes on the rich and the fight against climate change.

But his first term in office was marked by scandals. In recent years he has struggled with declining popularity as frustration grew over the cost of living and his own style of governing.

More than a dozen of his own lawmakers have called for his resignation, while polls suggest two-thirds of voters oppose him.

Just 26% of respondents in an Ipsos survey in September said Trudeau was their first choice for prime minister, putting him 19 points behind Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

History is also not on Trudeau’s side, as only two prime ministers have ever served four consecutive terms.

Poilievre rose to the top of his party in 2022 on a promise to cut taxes, fight inflation and protect individual freedoms.

The 45-year-old also rallied support for Freedom Convoy truckers protesting against Covid measures – a blockade that brought Canadian cities including Ottawa to a standstill.

Canada’s next prime minister will have to deal with the threat of tariffs from new US President Donald Trump.

He has promised to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods if the country fails to protect its shared border from the influx of irregular migrants and illegal drugs.

The “major challenge” involved was mentioned in the resignation letter from Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who resigned just hours before presenting her annual budget.

She said Trudeau told her he no longer wanted her as his government’s top economic adviser.
