Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has shed more light on his views on popular weight loss treatments.

Kennedy told CNBC (CMCSA-0.17%) Jim Cramer said Thursday that while GLP-1 drugs have their place in treatment, lifestyle changes should remain the primary approach to weight loss. This marks a more nuanced stance from the candidate, who has previously been critical of pharmaceutical solutions to combat obesity.

“The first reaction should be lifestyle. It should be eating well and ensuring you don’t become obese. These GLP drugs have their place,” Kennedy said.

GLP-1 drugs are a class of drugs that mimic a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar and have become popular in the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Recent studies and clinical trials have found that these medications also have health benefits beyond weight loss.

Wegovy is also one of the popular brands on the market (NVO+0.13%) and Eli Lilly’s (LLY-0.02%) Zepbound. The increasing demand for these treatments has made Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Kennedy has previously spoken out more strongly against the increasing use of these drugs. Instead, he has repeatedly promoted healthy eating as a solution to the country’s obesity epidemic.

“If we gave every man, woman and child in our country good food, three meals a day, we could end the obesity and diabetes epidemic overnight,” Kennedy said Fox News in October before the election.

His comments contrast with those of another Trump supporter – Elon Musk.

Musk, the richest person in the world and the co-head of President-elect Donald Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) doubled his support for Expanding access to affordable GLP-1 drugs for weight loss like Ozempic.

“Nothing would improve the health, longevity and quality of life of Americans more than making GLP inhibitors available to the public at extremely low cost. “Nothing else even comes close,” Musk wrote in one on Wednesday morning post on X, the social media site he owns.
