According to media reports, Party City, which recently emerged from bankruptcy, is closing all of its stores – another sign that brick-and-mortar retailers are struggling to make online purchases.

The New Jersey-based company, which is the largest party supply chain in the United States, has 21 locations in Michigan, according to its website. The Detroit News left an inquiry with a Party City representative Friday afternoon requesting information about the reported closures. Employees at several Party City stores in the Detroit area said they could not speak on the issue or had no information about store closures.

CNN reported that CEO Barry Litwin, who took over in August, told company employees in a meeting Friday that Party City was immediately “ceasing operations” because it was their last day of work. Employees were told they would not receive severance pay and that their benefits would end if the company went out of business. Some Party City store employees received letters informing them that the company would close stores on February 28, CNN also reported.
