Adjustments in the second half made the difference in the Rams’ victory

The Los Angeles Rams (6-6) earned a huge road win on Sunday afternoon after a strong second-half comeback after being shut out in the first half. The in-game adjustments made showed resilience and improvements compared to last week when they were not as successful.

At halftime, the Rams were down 6-0 to the New Orleans Saints (4-8), had just 93 yards of total offense and quarterback Matthew Stafford had only thrown for 23 yards. Changes had to be made or the Rams would likely have been eliminated from playoff contention with a loss. That wouldn’t happen.

After halftime, the Rams got the ball first and drove straight down the field. They capped an 11-play, six-minute drive with a four-yard touchdown rush by third-year senior Kyren Williams.

The Rams scored three touchdowns in four second-half drives and outscored the Saints 21-8 in the second half en route to a 21-14 victory that extended their playoff hopes for another week. Head coach Sean McVay spoke after the game about the halftime adjustments that made a difference.

“They talk about it, here’s some of the things they’re doing, here’s what we like, here’s what we’re going to do in the second half,” McVay said. “This is how we can operate if we stay one step ahead of the competition. Then they did some things to keep us from doing some of the core things that we might have done before. “I thought our coaches, I thought (offensive coordinator) Mike LaFleur, I thought (offensive coach) Ryan Wendell, really all of our offensive coaches did a great job of recognizing it, communicating it, and being able to get us to some of the right things that we wanted to do. Ultimately, it’s always about the players bringing it to life, and they’ve done that in a big way.

There is something to be said not only about the coach’s ability to take effective chances, but also about the players’ ability to make the Saints look like a completely different defense in the second half. There was a noticeable decline in the Saints’ defensive success in the second half, and it showed.

In future games, the Rams won’t be able to wait until the final 30 minutes to get their offense going. Three of the last five games of the season are played within the division. They need to win at least two of these games and a strong start will be the key to success.
