Advisory level winds will move through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties

Weather headlines:

-Gusty north-northeast winds will develop again Saturday evening and into Sunday, then the offshore flow pattern will strengthen and worsen through the middle of next week.

– A moderate to strong offshore wind event with warm and dry conditions is expected across much of the area next week.

Detailed forecast:

A ridge of high pressure will peak over the surface just offshore by Monday, then an upper-level low will dive southward on Tuesday.

Near the surface, weak to locally moderate north-northeast offshore flow will continue through Monday and strengthen on Tuesday.

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the models indicate decent offshore pressure gradients and decent wind support in the upper elevations.

Expect winds of recommended strength for the mountains in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

A wind advisory is now in effect for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties until 10 a.m. Sunday, January 5.

Wind gusts between 35 and 50 miles per hour are expected in these areas, with winds easing during the day Sunday.

From Sunday afternoon through Monday the wind shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

The weak north-northeast flow will continue into Monday morning, with a weak onshore flow re-emerging on Monday afternoon.

Overnight Monday into Tuesday as the upper level low sinks southward, the north-northeast flow will increase throughout the day on Tuesday, ushering in an extended period of significant offshore flow.

Sunday will be several degrees warmer compared to Saturday. Temperatures will be in the high 60s to mid 70s on the coasts and valleys, and in the high 50s to mid 60s inland.

As for temperatures, a warming trend is expected through Monday due to weak offshore flow.

However, some cold advection will bring slightly cooler temperatures across all areas on Tuesday as offshore flow increases.

Notes:

A high surf advisory is in effect for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties until Sunday, January 5, 9:00 p.m.

A moderate west-northwest swell will bring high surf of 10 to 14 feet on west-facing beaches along the Central Coast and 6 to 9 feet above in Ventura County.

The risk of a flow rib is high. However, any coastal flooding will be very minor.
