After Notre Dame wins the Sugar Bowl, they next play NBC Chicago

Fueled by a midgame surge, Notre Dame defeated SEC champion Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.

The Fighting Irish scored 17 points in a minute of play, with Riley Leonard connecting with a touchdown pass late in the second quarter and Jayden Harrison returning the opening kick of the third quarter for another score.

The Irish held Georgia to a 2-for-12 performance on third down of the game and stopped three fourth-down conversion attempts en route to a big win over the Bulldogs in New Orleans.

Now the Fighting Irish will advance to the semifinals of the playoffs, a bracket filled with the sport’s top-flight players.

Who will Notre Dame play next?

As a result of winning Thursday’s game, Notre Dame will face Big Ten runner-up Penn State in the Orange Bowl next week.

The Nittany Lions have also had to play two games in these playoffs, defeating ACC runner-up SMU in the first round and defeating Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

The game marks the 20thTh Notre Dame and Penn State have played against each other several times, the last game taking place in 2007. The Irish are 9-9-1 all-time against Penn State.

This is only the second time Notre Dame will play Penn State in a bowl game, after the Irish won the 1976 Gator Bowl against the Nittany Lions.

When should the game take place?

The Orange Bowl will be played one week from today, with the two teams facing off at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Thursday, January 9th at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Who will the winner compete against?

The winner of the Orange Bowl will advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday, January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Their opponent will be the winner of next week’s Cotton Bowl in Arlington, pitting the Texas Longhorns against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
