Egyptian giants Al Ahly face another historic milestone when they take on Mexican side Pachuca in the FIFA Challenger Cup on Saturday.

With a place in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final against Real Madrid at stake, the Red Devils will rely on a mix of youthful hunger and years of experience to thrive on the big stage.

The attack is led by Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali, who enjoyed a sensational debut season with Al Ahly.

Since joining the club in early 2024, Abou Ali has been a revelation, scoring crucial goals, including the opener in Al Ahly’s commanding 3-0 win over Al Ain in the FIFA Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup.

When Abou Ali spoke about the challenge ahead, he could not hide his excitement. “It has been an incredible nine months for me at Al Ahly,” Abou Ali told FIFA.com.

“It was a dream to score goals and help the team. We respect Pachuca; They are a strong team but we are determined to make it to the final. This tournament is huge, not just for the club but also for the fans and we will give everything we can.”

While Abou Ali represents Al Ahly’s future, captain and goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy embodies its unshakable tradition.

At 35, Elshenawy is taking part in his fourth FIFA club tournament and brings valuable experience to the team.

“This competition means everything to us,” Elshenawy said.

“Al Ahly has a proud history of success in international tournaments and it is always an honor to represent the club on this stage. Our goal is clear: win the Challenger Cup, reach the final and bring home the title.”

The match will be played at Doha’s iconic 974 Stadium, a venue Elshenawy knows well from Al Ahly’s 2021 FIFA Arab Cup campaign. “It’s a special place for us,” he said.

“The atmosphere is electric, especially with our fans. It gives us extra motivation to perform.”

For Abou Ali, playing in a FIFA World Cup stadium is another level of meaning.

“It’s surreal,” he said. “Dreams come true in this phase. For some players it is the first time and the hunger for performance is noticeable. It will be a spectacular game.”

With a mix of youthful energy and experienced leadership, Al Ahly are ready to make a lasting impression in the tournament.
