Al Michaels teased Bears over Caleb Williams’ draft day quote that has aged poorly

Caleb Williams had a lot of confidence coming into the NFL. After Williams was drafted No. 1 overall by the Chicago Bears, he boldly reached out to the team’s rookie punter, Tory Taylor, and told him that he wouldn’t be needed much in 2024.

“Hey, you’re not going to punt too much here,” Williams reportedly wrote to Taylor after the Bears drafted him. Since then, Chicago has attempted the third-most punts in the NFL, something play-by-play announcer Al Michaels made sure to note when discussing the team’s offense Football on Thursday evenings.

“Well… 71 punts. Third most in the league,” Michaels said as Taylor fired a kick in the first quarter against the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s a comment from Williams that has aged like milk, and even Michaels had some fun at the rookie quarterback’s expense when he brought it up on the Prime Video broadcast. By the end of the first half of Thursday’s game, Taylor had already tripped three times.

Williams’ rookie season didn’t turn out the way he expected on draft day, when he confidently made his claims about Chicago’s punting situation. As Williams continues to adjust to life in the NFL, the Bears’ special teams unit has received numerous punting reps for the 2024 season.

The 23-year-old, who is the most sacked quarterback in football this year, hopes to live up to his bold claims next season.
