Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. dies from Magic City Classic injuries

Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. died Tuesday night as a result of injuries sustained during the Magic City Classic game against Alabama State University in late October. Burnett was 20 years old.

Alabama A&M announced Burnett’s death in a news release Wednesday morning.

“Today our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” said Dr. Paul A. Bryant, Alabama A&M athletics director.

“Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; He was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership and compassion left an indelible impression on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our sadness, we are humbled by the strength of his family who stood by him throughout this unimaginable ordeal.”

“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Medrick’s parents, siblings and family. We also offer our heartfelt support to his teammates, coaches and the entire Alabama A&M community as they mourn this loss. In this moment of grief, we come together to honor Medrick’s legacy and celebrate the light he brought into our lives. May we all draw strength from one another during this difficult time.”

“Medrick Burnett Jr. will forever be remembered as a Bulldog. His spirit will remain an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the importance of unity, resilience and love.”

His sister Dominece had previously set up a GoFundMe for Burnett.

“Medrick Burnett Jr., aka “Meddy,” who plays college football for Alabama AAMU #51, played in the Magic City game on October 26, 2024 and was seriously injured after a head-on collision during the game. “Sister Dominece wrote in a GoFundMe set up for Burnett.

“His 20th birthday was October 27th and one of the worst birthdays for us because he was in intensive care and not doing well.”

“He had multiple brain bleeds and brain swelling. He had to have a drain tube placed to relieve the pressure and after two days of heavy pressure we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was a last resort to try and save his life.”

According to the university, the modalities of the memorial service will be announced later.
