Alabama Football: Latest transfer portal news, NFL updates

Happy Monday everyone. There’s not much going on today, but here’s what we have. Unfortunately, there isn’t much at stake in this year’s bowl game.

This year’s bowl meeting between Alabama (9-3) and Michigan (7-5) is more of the traditional “consolation” variety, with neither team achieving greater glory. And it’s not the first time the Crimson Tide has faced the same team in consecutive bowl games.

On three previous occasions – once in the 1960s, once in the 1970s and once in the last decade – Alabama has had a bowl rematch. In all of these cases, however, the national championship – or at least the question of who the best team in the country was – was at stake for at least one of the participants.

Devonta Smith, the defense attorney, has entered the portal.

Smith was a four-star recruit from Cincinnati, Ohio in 2021 who played primarily on special teams in his first two seasons. He missed most of the 2023 season with a foot injury before returning for the final four games and as a redshirt player. Smith has started every game this season except South Carolinaas Alabama began the game in a rare defensive formation with four instead of five.

Smith is Alabama’s 13th transfer portal entry this cycle. The transfer portal officially opened to students on Monday and will remain open until Dec. 28, or five days after a team’s final postseason game. Graduates can enter the portal at any time.

It’s been a bit of a mystery since he started, but Charlie Potter reported that Devonta is about to become a father as his girlfriend, who still lives in Cincinnati, is expecting to have a child soon.

Dylan Lonergan could very well end up in Georgia.

Lonergan was a four-star recruit from Snellville, Georgia. He was ranked as the No. 13 quarterback in the 2023 class and the Bulldogs recruited him, but he chose the Crimson Tide.

In 2024 with the Crimson Tide, he threw for 23 yards and ran for 16 yards on five completions. However, with Alabama apparently relying on five-star Ty Thompson to replace Jalen Milroe, Lonergan decided to transfer.

He announced his decision after Alabama missed the College Football Playoff. Lonergan has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Lonergan clearly didn’t think the QB competition would pave his way, otherwise he would have stuck around until spring training to see how things stood. Good luck to him.

Chris Low has a sobering update on how things stand.

Jahlil Hurley has found a home.

Hurley announced his intention to enter the transfer portal before Alabama learned it would not make the College Football Playoff. Since then, others have joined him, including defensive back DeVonta Smith, running back Justice Haynes and receiver Kendrick Law, among others. Hurley joins Keanu Koht (Vanderbilt) as former Alabama players who have already found a new home.

After all, it was a beautiful day for Alabama players in the NFL. Patrick Surtain got a pick, Brian Branch had 15 tackles and Will Anderson committed that Bama-on-Bama crime.

The touchdown scorers included Jameson Williams, DeVonta Smith, Josh Jacobs and…Jonah Williams?

The Bama player forced the fumble, the Bama player recovers the fumble. Alabama owns this league.

That’s it for today. I wish you a great week.

Roll Tide.
