Alaska Airlines website crashes as Cyber Monday sales begin, causing flight cancellations

A technology issue at Alaska Airlines led to a temporary grounding of flights in Seattle on Monday morning and into the afternoon caused problems for people trying to book flights on its website, the airline said.

The Seattle-based company said in a statement that the issue caused a “significant disruption” to its operations Monday morning — including delayed flights. The airline said it requested a 40-minute ground stop at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to clear the aircraft traffic jam.

No further information was given about the technical problem; the reason for the disruption was unclear.

A message on the company’s website Monday afternoon said there were problems booking flights on the website, through a mobile app and in the contact center.

“We sincerely apologize to our affected guests and are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible,” the statement said.

The problems occurred at the start of the company’s Cyber Monday flight sales. In the comments of his account
