ALCS teacher killed in shooting was full-time employee, substitute teacher was injured, MPD says

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The teacher killed in Monday’s shooting at Abundant Life Christian School was a full-time employee, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said Tuesday morning.

He added that a substitute teacher was also injured in Monday’s attack.

Clarification: Previously, Chief Barnes incorrectly said that the teacher who was killed was a substitute teacher. That wasn’t correct. He later corrected himself and said the teacher killed was a full-time employee.

Chief Barnes said he didn’t know if the 15-year-old gunman intentionally singled out anyone in the shooting.

“We don’t know if there is any reason to target a (substitute) teacher in this case who has no significant ties to the school,” he said Tuesday morning.

In a news conference Monday at 8:30 p.m., Barnes said that at 10:57 a.m. a second-grader made a 911 call reporting the shooting. Barnes believes the second-grader was in a different room than the active shooter.

The first police officer, a Dane County deputy, arrived at the school at 11 a.m. Less than 30 seconds later, Madison police officers arrived and entered the school.

At 11:05 a.m., officers said a shooter was on the ground and a weapon was recovered. The fire department arrived and began helping the shot victims. Police also began setting up a reunification center.

The first public notice of the shooting was posted on the MPD website at 11:13 a.m. A minute later, authorities began evacuating the building. At 11:23 a.m., bomb dogs were brought to the school as a precaution

As of 11:26 a.m., the victims who were treated at the school were taken to area hospitals

Monday’s shooting occurred in a classroom with students in different grades.

United Way of Dane County has established a fund to support those affected by the tragedy. According to the company’s website, 100% of the proceeds from the Abundant Life Christian School Emergency and Recovery Fund go to the school’s families. If you would like to donate, you can text “HELP4ALCS” to 40403 or click here to donate through the United Way website.

Churches and local organizations in the area have planned community events and vigils to help those affected and grieving by the shooting.

Madison police are expected to provide another update Tuesday at 1 p.m.
