Club América has become the first in Liga MX’s short-format era to win three consecutive titles after a 1-1 draw against Monterrey sealed a 3-2 aggregate win in the 2024 Apertura two-legged final expanded its league-leading record of championships to 16.

The victory marks the third consecutive title for América after winning the Apertura 2023 and Clausura 2024.

América entered the Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Monterrey on Sunday with a 2-1 lead from the first leg and was able to absorb the pressure well before the offensive took over. After a goal from captain Henry Martin in the 18th minute was ruled offside, the visitors broke the early stalemate in the 24th minute thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Richard Sanchez.

In response, Martin Demichelis’ Monterrey struggled to create enough threat and fired a shot past opposing goalkeeper Luis Malagon.

Although América began to lose intensity and lost Martin to injury, having to be substituted in the 42nd minute, Monterrey went into half-time trailing 0-1 and needed to score at least two goals to make the aggregate score 3-1.

With the lead in hand, América coach Andre Jardine focused on a pragmatic and cautious style of play in the second half. By using a 5-3-2 formation, he was able to get numerous players behind the ball Las Aguilas impressed with their defensive efforts, which nipped Demichelis’ more offensive approach in the bud.

Although some tactical changes from Monterrey led to a goal from substitute Johan Rojas in the late 85th minute and a shot that hit the woodwork in the 88th minute, Los Rayados narrowly failed and their consolation goal was not enough to equalize the two-legged tie against Club América.

By the final whistle – after six minutes of added time – Jardine’s team secured the 3-2 aggregate result and the Apertura title.

In the league’s all-time table, América now has a lead of four championships over rival Chivas (12). Jardine, who took over the club in 2023, has now led América to three consecutive Liga MX trophies, winning the Campeon de Campeones and Campeones Cup in 2024.

América has won six of its 16 league titles since 2013.

Next year América wants to keep its trophy while also participating in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and Campeones Cup.

Monterrey, which sits 10th in the all-time Liga MX table with five trophies, will also take part in the Concacaf Champions Cup, the Leagues Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
