An anonymous player is still holding on to an unclaimed Powerball ticket worth $1 million – and it was purchased at a popular gas station

A LUCKY lottery player is close to Christmas after winning a top prize playing Powerball – but he may not know it yet.

The anonymous winner is $1 million richer because he bought his ticket at a gas station in Michigan in September.

He or she missed out on the jackpot, but matched all five numbers on the white balls in the September 4th drawing to win the big prize.

The winning numbers in this game were 7, 10, 21, 33, 59 and the Powerball 20.

Although no one determined the winning numbers for the two main prizes, the unknown player still won a life-changing sum.

The ticket was purchased at MD Westland LLC, a popular gas station in Westland, Wayne County, about 18 miles from Detroit.

The anonymous winner has until 4:45 p.m. September 4, 2025 to claim their prize in accordance with Michigan State Lottery Rules.

If the player has still not registered by the deadline, the claim to the prize money will be forfeited.

When Powerball prizes go unclaimed, a portion of the money goes to each state where the game is played.

From there, the money could end up back in the lottery or used to fund government work and programs.

Demand the money

In Michigan, winnings over $100,000 must be claimed at lottery headquarters in Lansing after making an appointment with the office.

In this case, the anonymous winner of the $1 million prize should sign the back of the winning ticket before going to lottery headquarters.

My husband and I won $500,000 in the $5 scratch-off lottery game the same day we received an eviction notice – but we still lost everything

Winner will also need a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license or social security card.

Prize must be picked up in Michigan as the ticket was purchased there. If the winner lives out of state, it may involve a long trip, but it’s well worth the trip.

POWERBALL GET IN

Powerball is extremely popular across the country and is played in 48 US lottery territories.

The length of time players have to claim prizes varies by state, ranging from 90 days to a full year – as is the case in Michigan.

Tickets are $2 and can be entered into raffles held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Lottery winnings: lump sum or pension?

Players who win big on lottery tickets usually have a choice: lump sum or pension?

The two withdrawal methods can affect how much money you receive from your prize.

Pensions are paid out slowly and gradually, often over a period of 30 years.

Lump sums are paid out all at once, but in a smaller amount because the taxes are withheld all at once. This means 24% of your prize immediately goes to Uncle Sam. Many states also tax profits.

Annuities can give winners time to build the financial infrastructure needed to borrow a life-changing amount of money. However, lump sum amounts have the advantage that they are only taxed once.

Inflation is also important to consider when choosing, as payouts do not adjust based on the value of a dollar. This means you’re likely to receive less valuable money toward the end of retirement.

Each state and each game pays prizes differently. Therefore, it’s best to check with your state’s lottery to confirm payment policies. A financial advisor can also help you weigh the pros and cons of each option.

Experts have different opinions about whether to use the lump sum or the pension.

Players choose five numbers between 1 and 69 on the white balls and then a number between 1 and 26 for the red Powerball.

In Powerball, the jackpot increases until it is won, so some winners win more money than others depending on how long the prize pot has been growing.

According to the Powerball website, California’s largest jackpot to date is $2.04 billion in 2022.

Grand prize winners can choose whether they would like to receive their money as a lump sum or as an annuity over 29 years.

Michigan’s most recent lottery winner isn’t the only one who doesn’t claim his prize.

Another $1 million is currently unclaimed in Missouri from a November Mega Millions drawing.

In Florida, a Mega Millions winner is expected to be $5 million richer when he collects his prize from the Dec. 10 drawing.
