Andy Robertson: Not our best but it’s all about winning games

The Reds secured a 1-0 away win at the Estadi Montilivi on Tuesday evening, making them six out of six league wins so far this season.

Mohamed Salah’s assured second-half penalty made the difference for Arne Slot’s men against the La Liga side, giving him his 50th career goal in the competition and the club’s 150th European Cup win.

After the game, Robertson – who was named UEFA’s player of the match – gave his assessment of the encounter. Read the left-back’s reaction below…

About the satisfaction of the sixth consecutive victory in the Champions League…

Yes, of course six out of six wins – you couldn’t ask for much better. That’s not easy, otherwise there would be more teams that would do it. Our performances were good, we won games. But we played a lot better than we did tonight, that’s for sure, we weren’t at our highest level tonight. But at this point it’s about winning the games and securing qualification and I think we’ve done that.

At the level of control in Liverpool’s game…

I think we needed to have a little more control, sometimes especially in the first half it was a bit like a basketball game – back and forth – and that’s what they wanted. We left ourselves too open and gave our goalkeeper too much to do, which didn’t suit us.

Our pressing and things like that were maybe a bit poor, but when we had the ball we had a bit of control, we created chances and we could have scored a few goals. We kept a clean sheet and won the game. We can play much better than before, but three points are crucial, especially away from home in the Champions League.
