Ange Postecoglou makes a mistake to James Maddison in the Tottenham XI game against Roma

Ange Postecoglou may regret benching James Maddison for Tottenham against Roma.

Spurs will be looking to build on their impressive 4-0 Premier League away win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium (November 23).

On Thursday (November 28th) they face a Roma team that has not won since October in the UEFA Europa League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite a development at the Serie A club that has caused some surprise ahead of the clash, fans in north London are still confident of victory given their opponents’ poor form this season.

However, Postecoglou has suffered some serious injuries ahead of the clash, with Cristian Romero unavailable and Guglielmo Vicario potentially out for more than two months.

And with such key players unavailable, Postecoglou may have made a mistake by leaving out Maddison, a decision confirmed via Spurs’ official X account (November 28).

James Maddison is missing from the Tottenham XI game against Roma

While Postecoglou named a relatively strong team against Roma, he left Maddison out, a decision that would cost him.

The 28-year-old was brilliant against City. According to Sofascore, Maddison not only scored twice against the Premier League champions, but also completed 100 percent of his dribbles and completed 89 percent of his passes.

He also delivered two accurate long balls forward, won nine of his 13 ground duels, cleared twice, intercepted and blocked a shot.

Therefore, this could have been the perfect opportunity for Maddison to build some momentum. However, his contributions are now limited to possible appearances on the substitute bench.

In other Tottenham news, it looks like Timo Werner is set to leave the club following Manchester United transfer news.
