Animoca Brands founder Yat Sius’ X account is being exploited to promote fake MOCA tokens

The X account of Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu, one of the most influential CoinDesk members of 2024, was compromised and used to promote a fictitious token, the company said in a post on the social media platform.

Animoca, a metaverse and gaming venture capital firm, posted a warning on its own account at 01:36 UTC on Thursday that Sius account had been compromised and that the company was not launching an official token or non-fungible token (NFT).

According to ZachXBT, the exploit was likely perpetrated via a phishing email purporting to be from X and related to copyright infringement. The crypto exploit investigator reported on Tuesday several similar attacks that took place last month, which allowed the perpetrators to get away with about $500,000 at the time.

According to a screenshot posted by ZachXBT, the false post from Siu’s account promoted a token called MOCA on the Solana blockchain.

The Moca Foundation, a “community-owned foundation dedicated to increasing the network effects of Mocaverse,” has its own Moca Coin (MOCA), which it calls an “omni-chain network token.” Mocaverse is an account and ID management system in which both Animoca and Siu are personally involved.

According to a Mocaverse post, control of Siu’s account has been secured by X, which is currently verifying ownership. Associated accounts remain unaffected.

“There is no compromise on the official brand names of Animoca Brands, Moca Network or the MOCA Foundation and strict security measures are in place,” it said.
