Anna Sawai gave a very short victory speech after winning her first Golden Globe, taking home the award for best female actress in a TV drama for her performance in the FX drama Shōgun.

“Thank you to the voters who voted for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates any day,” Sawai said, referring to her competitor, who was nominated for “Matlock.”

“Thank you to our incredible writers. Without a good script, it is impossible to reach our full potential. Thanks to everyone else. I will thank you later!” Sawai concluded.

In Shōgun, Sawai Toda plays Mariko, a high-born woman who acts as a translator between Japanese ruler Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis). She beat Bates (“Matlock”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of the Dragon”), Keira Knightley (“Black Doves”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Maya Erskine (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” “) “) in the category.

In September, “Shōgun” won 18 Emmys for its first season, breaking the record for the series with the most awards in a single year. Sawai won the award for Best Female Lead Actress in a TV Drama Series, becoming the first Japanese actress to win a Primetime Emmy Award and the first Asian actress to win in the category. The Japanese-language period drama won other major awards at the Golden Globes, including Best TV Drama, Best Male Actor in a Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada and Best Supporting Male Actor in a Drama for Tadanobu Asano.

Outside of “Shōgun,” Sawai is known for her roles in the fast-paced racing film “F9” and the Apple TV+ drama series “Pachinko.” New Zealand native Sawai moved to Japan as a child and landed her first acting role at age 11 as the title role in the 2004 Nippon TV production “Annie.”
