Anonymous NBA executive and agent warn Jimmy Butler not to take action against Pat Riley

After weeks of whispers and controversial reporting, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler publicly said Thursday night that playing for the organization brought no joy and he likely won’t be able to return to his happy place while on South Beach. As the February 6 NBA trade deadline approaches, it appears to be time for players and franchises to find a path forward. And as Butler expresses his frustration, the tension escalates, leading to a potential showdown with Heat manager Pat Riley, a notoriously smart and shrewd operator.

ESPN addressed the situation with a roundtable piece Friday morning, as Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps shared their reporting, which included conversations with other NBA executives and agents who anonymously gave Butler words of caution.

“You can’t intimidate Pat Riley,” an agent told Windhorst.

“You never want to argue with someone who has nothing to lose,” a rival manager told Bontemps. “And Pat has nothing to lose.”

It’s pointed language and reflects Riley’s decades of maneuvering. It’s also catnip for fans of “This League” and all the off-court drama it has to offer.

Two things to consider. First, it may not be true that Pat Riley has nothing to lose. He’s 79 years old and loves to win, so it’s hard to imagine him doing anything that will make the Miami Heat worse, even if it ends up being a win for Butler. Second, Butler needs to know this, and his decision to go public probably reflects a willingness to get involved as well. There’s no way he can get involved without having his eyes completely open to the person he’s dealing with.
