Another major fire with the potential for rapid spread erupted in Los Angeles County on Tuesday as the Palisades Fire burned over 3,000 acres, destroying buildings, forcing residents to flee and threatening the iconic Getty Villa.

The Eaton fire was first reported around 6:30 p.m. local time near the eastern Los Angeles suburb of Altadena, according to KTTV and CBS News. Mandatory evacuations were ordered for several streets near and in parts of neighboring Pasadena.

Cal Fire confirmed the Eaton fire had quickly spread to 200 acres Tuesday evening and was 0% contained amid a brutal storm in Southern California that is expected to peak overnight. The Pasadena Fire Department said the fire was being fueled by persistent Santa Ana winds, CBS News reported.

Officials have not confirmed whether the Eaton fire caused damage to surrounding homes or buildings, KTTV reported.

Meanwhile, city, county and state firefighters are battling the Pacific Palisades fire that has threatened more than 10,000 homes and 13,000 structures, Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said at a news conference.

“We are by no means out of the woods,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said at the press conference. “I saw firsthand the impact of these swirling winds and embers and how many structures were destroyed. Quite a few, many buildings have already been destroyed.”
