Another second base option is off the board for the Seattle Mariners in Gleyber Torres Si

On Friday morning, it was reported that former New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres had signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers:

Free agent Gleyber Torres is agreeing to a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, sources tell ESPN. Torres had a great ALCS after a somewhat weak year on the Yankees’ power side. He will start at 2b for Detroit. @JonHeyman was first with the agreement.

Torres was linked to the Seattle Mariners earlier this offseason, but that came more from writers speculating on passing ratios. We never really heard a connection between the Mariners and Torres and the M’s didn’t seem to show any outward interest. The M’s have a need at second base after letting Jorge Polanco walk, but they’ve also reportedly said they’ll be fine if they end up with a Dylan Moore/Ryan Bliss tandem at second base.

Should the M’s actually decide to make a splash at second, Polanco is still out there and could be available at a cheaper price than the $12 million team option the team declined. Additionally, the M’s have been linked to and are said to be interested in Korean infielder Hye-Seong Kim.

Beyond second base, the Mariners also need third base after letting Josh Rojas walk. Yoan Moncada is still a free agent and has a former top prospect pedigree. The trade market is also an option as the M’s were previously linked to Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies.
