Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards summed up the story that Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant is a bad leader in one word.

“I think that’s bullshit,” Edwards told Fox Sports’ Melissa Rohlin. He added:

“All he cares about is basketball, so that’s leadership right there. If your best player only cares about basketball, that’s one way to lead. I think people only see leadership as being vocal. I think there are multiple ways to be a leader.” He’s definitely a great leader.

Edwards continued his train of thought, referencing their time together on Team USA this summer en route to an Olympic gold medal.

“He was a leader for me in the United States because it was my first time and I wasn’t used to it. I definitely went under his wing and just followed everything he did. He sucks for me, man. I don’t know what he’s doing. I don’t really care what anyone says about him.

Edwards’ love for KD is well documented.

Durant previously responded “Ant” when asked who gets the best out of him in the NBA. Upon hearing this, Edwards had this to say about KD.

“That’s like my big brother, man,” Edwards told Rohlin. “I love KD. He’s my favorite player of all time, so I definitely appreciate that.”

Needless to say, Edwards thinks clearly about Durant.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith voiced criticism of Durant’s leadership and capitalized on it during one last October First recording Consequence.

Durant reached out to X to disagree.

I would disagree, Stephen. I would passionately argue that my intangibles have always been equal to my talent

“I really wanted it to be KD, but he won’t do it,” Barkley said. “For me it has to be Booker… No disrespect to Kevin. Kevin is a follower. He is not a leader. He proved that at all his stops…”

During a November 2017 interview with GQ’s Zach Baron, Durant spoke at length about leadership. At the time, he had just spent a year with the Golden State Warriors, who have been led by Stephen Curry for more than a decade. KD talked about how he likes to lead by example.

“Steph Curry is the face of the franchise, and that helps me because I don’t have to. I don’t want to have to be the leader. I am not a leader. I have a hard time saying, “Stand behind me and follow me.” No. I’m one of those people who just says, ‘Let’s all work together.’ I don’t mind being on the front lines with you, but let’s come and do it together.’ That’s my kind of leadership.

Durant largely answered the question about his leadership style seven years ago. Maybe people don’t agree with this because it’s not as obvious as some might like, but it is what it is.

Regardless, Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer is a fan of Durant’s leadership, calling it “exceptional” on Nov. 1, according to Azcentral’s Duane Rankin.

And KD also has one of the NBA’s top superstars at his side in Edwards.

This season, Durant has led by example, averaging 25.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the sixth-place Suns. What’s notable is that Phoenix went 13-2 with him in the lineup and just 1-9 without him, as KD had to miss 10 games due to injury.

However, he has now been back for two games and has averaged 25.0 PPG in two wins. Next up is the Indiana Pacers at home on Thursday.
