Depending on atmospheric conditions, including cloud cover and level of geomagnetic activity, there is a possibility that the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, could be visible in the Mid-Atlantic region tonight.

This rare opportunity arises from a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center said earlier this week.

The Northern Lights occur when charged solar particles interact with the Earth’s magnetic field and create breathtaking displays of light in the sky.

The current strength of Storm G2 suggests the aurora could spread further south than usual, potentially making it visible in states from New York to parts of the Midwest and possibly even the Mid-Atlantic.

The best time to look for the Northern Lights tonight is very late in the evening, between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., when the sky is darkest.

When can I see the Northern Lights tonight?

If you’re in the Philadelphia and New Jersey area, staying away from the city lights will increase your chances of spotting the Northern Lights. Places with clear, unobstructed views to the north offer the best vantage points.

While auroras are typically confined to high-latitude regions near the Arctic, current solar activity is strong enough to bring the lights further south.
