Arkansas Could See Winter Weather This Week | Warning of weather effects

As temperatures continue to drop, the chances of parts of central Arkansas seeing snow or ice on Thursday and Friday are increasing. Here’s what you should know.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The potential for winter weather in Arkansas continues to increase for Thursday, Jan. 9, through the following Friday.

For this reason, our team of THV11 meteorologists has issued a weather warning for both days.

We’re still a few days away from possible winter weather, and the track of low pressure is everything, as always.

What can we expect?

Parts of the state could see snow, while other parts could see a mix of ice and snow. Some may see pure rain. Over the next 24 hours we will better understand what lies ahead.

A mix of wintry precipitation including snow, sleet, and freezing rain is currently possible with this developing winter storm.

Snow is expected mostly in the northern half of the state, although there could be an area in central Arkansas where several inches of snow could fall.

Southern Arkansas may experience more sleet and freezing rain during this event. However, it’s a little too early to say exactly how much, but it appears to be a severe winter storm.

How likely is it that we will experience winter weather?

Our models show consistency regarding the likelihood of winter weather. The location of the low determines the temperatures and types of precipitation possible in each area.

When will winter weather come?

An Arctic air mass will be present over much of the central to southern United States Wednesday through Thursday, driven by a strong region of high surface pressure.

This air mass will keep temperatures below normal across much of the state, with overnight lows in the teens to lower 20s and highs only reaching the mid to upper 30s in most locations. This pattern determines the potential for winter weather Thursday through Friday.

Currently in Arkansas, weather forecasts indicate precipitation will arrive over the western and southwestern portions of the state as early as Thursday morning. Central Arkansas could begin experiencing impacts as early as Thursday afternoon and last through the first half of Friday.

Although confidence in winter weather is high, there remains significant uncertainty surrounding this system due to the forecast timeframe. Concrete details, such as the exact location and time of the accumulations, have not yet been reliably clarified.
