Arkansas defeats No. 14 Michigan at Madison Square Garden

The Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines with an 89-87 win at the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Arkansas trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, led by as many as 18 points in the second half, and then led by just one point with less than a minute left in regulation.

Freshman guard Boogie Fland, a native of the Bronx, New York, led the Razorbacks with 20 points, seven assists, one rebound and two steals. Fland knocked down two of the Hogs’ nine made 3-point shots, and they shot 50.0% from the field as a team in the game.

Guard DJ Wagner added 16 points, three rebounds and five assists for the Hogs, while Trevon Brazile also performed well with 15 points, six rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist.

Michigan shot 57.6% from the field and the Wolverines had two 7-footers, Danny Wolf and Vladislov Goldin, score in double figures with nine rebounds each.

Brazile was the star of the show in the first period as he scored four points, two rebounds and a steal to help the Hogs take an 8-7 lead into the first media timeout.

The Wolverines then went on a run with seven straight field goals for a 13-2 scoring margin that gave them a 24-12 lead and triggered a Calipari timeout with 10:08 left in the first half.

Michigan forward Will Tschetter, who was averaging 6.7 points per game early in the contest, scored 13 points 8:31 into the game as his fourth-down shot gave the Wolverines a 15-point lead. The Hogs knocked down a few shots from the ensuing offensive players to cut the deficit to 33-21 with under 8 minutes left at the timeout.

However, the Razorbacks found offense of their own and made five straight field goals to cut Michigan’s lead to 42-38 with less than three minutes to play. The Hogs were shooting over 50% from the field at this point and Fland and Thiero were already in double figures.

After two layups by the Wolverines, Arkansas went on a quick 7-0 run, which was followed by a 3-pointer from Michigan just before halftime that reduced the Hogs’ deficit to 49-45 at the break. At halftime, Michigan was shooting 61.3% from the field and 58.3% from three.

The Razorbacks got their first lead of the game coming out of the locker room, and Michigan head coach Dusty May called a timeout after the Hogs took a 52-49 lead with 17:09 left in the second half. Just before the first media timeout at 15.5 minutes, Arkansas extended its lead to as many as six.

Fland made a corner three-pointer to give the Hogs the lead, and they led Michigan by 14 points in the second half. Wagner joined in the 3-point barrage as he knocked down the Hogs’ third triple of the second half, increasing the lead to 65-55. Wagner then continued his own winning streak by knocking down two more shots, including a three-pointer, to give the Razorbacks a strong 73-61 lead with under 12 minutes left at the timeout.

Michigan then began a period of play littered with turnovers that allowed Arkansas to extend the lead to 18 points, but the Wolverines promptly scored 6 straight points to make the game 80-0 with 8:30 left in regulation. 68. Michigan’s run extended to twelve straight points, cutting the deficit to just six points.

With the Razorbacks in the midst of a six-plus minute scoring rout, Michigan managed a four-point game with just under three minutes left. That deficit remained constant until a layup by Wolf gave the Wolverines a 1-point lead with just over a minute to play.

Michigan started fouling to save time with 32.6 seconds left in regulation, and that eventually led to an 89-87 lead for the Razorbacks with just 3.7 seconds left and another chance for the Wolverines who didn’t have one could knock over the buzzer. Bat.

The Razorbacks next face the Central Arkansas Bears at Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
