Arne Slot expects Mohamed Salah to continue at Liverpool

Liverpool expect Mohamed Salah to “carry on for a long time” in the Premier League after an impressive performance in a 3-3 draw at Newcastle United on Wednesday, according to head coach Arne Slot.

Salah’s contract expires at the end of the current season and he recently said he was “disappointed” that the club had not offered him a new one. The 32-year-old showed once again why he deserves a new contract after assisting Curtis Jones in the Reds’ opener and then scoring twice before Fabian Schar scored a late equalizer for the home side.

With 37 goals and assists in the same game, Salah has now set a Premier League record – more than any other player in the history of the competition. After his two goals, the Egyptian international is currently the top scorer in the top flight this season with 13 goals.

After the game at St James’ Park, Slot told Amazon Prime via BBC: “Every time we need Mo Salah, he scores a goal.

“We hope and expect that he can continue this for a long time. He was outstanding in the second half, he did a lot of special things for us.”

The Dutchman added: “I watched a lot of games last season, but it’s always difficult to judge a player when you’re not there. What I did most was the style of play and the team performance and not so much the individual performance and what stood out to me. “From the beginning when he came in (in pre-season), how fit he was, how ready he was was to make it a very good season for him.

“That he led by example from day one of pre-season, when so many of his teammates that he normally plays with, the international players, weren’t there, and that he was still able to work so hard and train so hard : Yes, and then we all saw the quality in the training sessions. So it’s no surprise to me that he’s done so well so far.

Liverpool have dropped points for only the third time this season since Slot took charge in the summer, and their lead has shrunk from nine to seven points at the start of a busy December.
