Liverpool drew with Newcastle in a 3-3 thriller at St James’ Park on Wednesday night and the home side might have won the game had it not been for Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian superstar has been in phenomenal form at the start of the 2024/25 season, with the winger’s goals playing a crucial role in the incredible start that Arne Slot has had on Merseyside.

Salah has made 21 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring 15 goals and 12 assists, while he has scored in the Reds’ last seven Premier League games.

The 32-year-old stepped up again on Wednesday night as the Egyptian captain scored a brace and set up another as Liverpool trailed Newcastle in the second half of the competition.

Slot admitted after the game that Salah was “outstanding” after the game was tied 1-1 and was full of praise for his star.

“Every time we need him he scores an important goal,” the Dutch coach told Amazon Prime Sport. “We hope and expect that he can keep it up for a long time.

“When we made it 1-1, he was outstanding from that moment on because he also hit the crossbar, he created the chance for Macca. Apart from the goals, he did even more special things for us. A great performance from him in the second half too.”

Liverpool must sort out Mohamed Salah’s future

It is well documented that Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season and despite his contributions to the current campaign, the 32-year-old is yet to receive a new contract – something the winger recently admitted.

David Ornstein reported on Wednesday that Liverpool had made a contract offer to their captain Virgil van Dijk, but Salah’s future had not yet been decided.

The Egyptian’s situation is likely to resolve itself in early 2025, especially if the winger continues to perform at his current level. The Reds need to think wisely about what they offer Salah given his age, but at the moment he is a player the Merseyside club cannot let go for nothing.
