Arrests at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade: 21 pro-Palestinian protesters

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was disrupted on Thursday by a group of pro-Palestinian protesters.

New York police said they arrested 21 people who briefly disrupted the annual event in Manhattan.

According to multiple news outlets, protesters jumped over the barricades at Fifth Avenue and West 55th Street and blocked a Ronald McDonald balloon around 9:30 a.m. local time. The group, carrying Palestinian flags and banners, sat on the parade route and began chanting: “Free, free Palestine!” One of the banners read: “Don’t celebrate genocide!” Now arms embargo.”

In videos posted online, viewers in the crowd can be heard expressing their displeasure at the disruption, with some shouting, “USA!” USA! USA!” Others reportedly booed the protesters and then cheered as police led them away.

The parade ended up being delayed by about five minutes. According to WABC, charges are pending against the protesters.

This is the second year in a row that people protesting Israel’s war in Gaza disrupted the parade. A total of 34 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested last year.

Both times the demonstrators blocked the Ronald McDonald balloon. Some media outlets have speculated that McDonald’s may have been the target in both cases due to its alleged support of Israel in the war. That perception has led to a boycott of the fast-food chain, and the company bought back all of its Israeli restaurants earlier this year after sales declined.
