Arsenal set pieces: “The new Stoke City”? Best set piece and corner kick stats and reactions

The consensus seems to be yes – but with difficulties.

There are several aspects of Arsenal’s set pieces that make them extremely difficult for opponents to defend. The first is the excellent delivery.

“The decisive factor is the throw of the ball, the movement and the blocking of the goalkeeper. The ball is played over the first player (at the near post) and it’s perfect,” said former Arsenal defender Martin Keown on Match of the Day while analyzing Declan Rice’s throw to give Jurrien Timber the opener.

Izzy Christiansen noted on Football Daily how many of Arsenal’s corners were taken directly over United goalkeeper Andre Onana, who was surrounded by “blockers”.

And in Match of the Day, Amorim seemed to agree, adding: “You put a lot of players close to the goalkeeper and it’s almost impossible to fight for the ball.”

Speaking to Amazon after the full-time break, Rice said: “We stick to it (set pieces) all the time, we never get bored. With repetition you will eventually score goals.”

“When you go up, it’s a chance to score a goal, not a chance to relax and unwind.”

Variety is also important. Arsenal kept United guessing as their first goal came from a ball thrown at the front post and their second from a corner sent to the back post.

“Sometimes they start at the front post but then go to the back post, and sometimes they have Gabriel in the middle. The key for Arsenal is to create variety,” said Match of the Day expert Micah Richards.

Keown argued that United did not make it difficult enough for Arsenal to score from corners.

“(United) are in a zone system, no-one is engaging and it is far too easy for Arsenal. They are just passengers, it’s just naivety,” he said.

The opponents used a man-to-man marking system, but also without much joy. Some fans are complaining on social media that Arsenal’s use of blocks and subtle pushes goes unpunished.

“As coaches, when we prepare these strategies, you know what the opponent is going to do,” former Everton coach Martinez said on Amazon.

“The uniqueness of Arsenal’s work is that they always find a little trick that makes it impossible to defend something when the performance is right.”
