At least 10 dead after driver plows his car into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans

New Orleans police describe “deliberate behavior” by the driver who killed 10 people. The suspect’s status is unclear

New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver who plowed a car into a large crowd on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning did so intentionally.

Kirkpatrick said the man was driving a pickup truck down Bourbon Street “at a very fast pace.” The suspect also fired a gun at police officers from the vehicle, hitting two police officers whose condition has since stabilized.

“It was very deliberate behavior,” the police commissioner said. “This man tried to run over as many people as possible.”

Kirkpatrick said it was not a drunk driving case but was “more complex and serious based on the information we currently have.”

According to police, 26 injured people were taken to UMC Hospital, four were transported to Ochsner Baptist and one person is at Tulane Medical Center. Additional injured victims could be taken to additional hospitals, Kirkpatrick said.

“I think it’s a very tragic situation to have to tell you that this man killed 10 people on Bourbon Street,” she said.

Kirkpatrick said the FBI would take over the investigation. The suspect’s status is unclear.

She also urged residents and tourists to continue to enjoy the city on New Year’s Day, noting that the Superdome will be safe for the Sugar Bowl game between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame football teams.
