At least 2 storm-related deaths as severe weather hits south

At least two people died in storm-related deaths in the south, officials said Saturday.

Two tornadoes have been confirmed in Texas, with severe damage reported to several homes in Liverpool on Saturday.

There was also a confirmed tornado near Splendora, Texas around noon local time.

In Texas, there was at least one storm-related death and “major damage to buildings and schools, as well as power outages,” Dan Davis, mayor of Manvel, Texas, confirmed to ABC News.

Davis told ABC News that many people east of Manvel are now without power or running water and mobile homes have been demolished.

At least one person has died and two others were injured in Mississippi due to the “severe weather,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. said on X Saturday evening.

“Damage assessments are underway and will continue throughout the night,” Reeves said.

More tornadoes are expected throughout the afternoon and evening as severe weather continues to erupt across the south.

The Texas tornado watch has been classified as a “particularly hazardous situation,” which will only be assigned a tornado watch if the Storm Prediction Center has “a highly reliable forecast of multiple intense tornadoes (rating EF2-EF5).”

According to the Storm Prediction Center, the designation only appears in about 7% of tornado watches.

There is a moderate risk of severe weather Saturday from East Texas through Louisiana and Mississippi to Alabama.

The severe weather threat began Saturday morning in Texas and will then increase further east through the evening and overnight.

The greatest risk is for multiple strong and large, long-track tornadoes, possibly EF3 or higher, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Other risk factors include large hail, damaging winds and flash floods.

As for rain, 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected Saturday across south Texas to Alabama and Tennessee, with 5 or more inches possible locally, leading to flash flood risks.

The same storm complex will reach the Southeast on Sunday, posing a serious threat there as well, although it is expected to be significantly less extreme than Saturday.

Strong to severe storms will move into Georgia and the Carolinas during the morning hours, where major hubs such as Charlotte and Atlanta may experience morning delays due to the storm.

The primary threat on Sunday will be damaging winds and possible tornadoes, although the threat is less than Saturday.

Strong to severe storms are also possible in Virginia during the late morning and early afternoon.

This rain will reach Philadelphia to New York City early Monday morning but is expected to be gone by sunrise Monday. However, Boston will have a rainy Monday morning.
