Atlanta Falcons WRs Drake London and Darnell Mooney are on the verge of history

Atlanta Falcons wide receivers Drake London and Darnell Mooney are on the verge of accomplishing a feat the franchise hasn’t seen in 12 years — but offensive coordinator Zac Robinson knew it was possible early in the spring.

London is just 22 yards away from 1,000 receiving yards this season, while Mooney needs 45 yards to reach the same mark. London, a third-year pro, had his first 1,000-yard campaign, while Mooney had his second in his fifth season.

Better yet, they would be the first Falcons receiving duo to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in the same season since Julio Jones and Roddy White did so in 2012.

Despite inconsistencies in the passing game that ultimately led to the Falcons benching starting quarterback Kirk Cousins for rookie Michael Penix Jr. last week, London and Mooney thrived.

It’s the dream Robinson and the Falcons’ staff have had since signing Mooney to a three-year, $39 million contract in the spring.

“In free agency, Darnell was our main target to complement Drake’s skill set,” Robinson said Tuesday. “We all liked his speed and his one-on-one skills. So when the guys in the front office did a great job of pulling those guys here along with (tight end) Charlie Woerner, we were all thrilled.” “

The Falcons began spring training in early April, implementing Robinson’s system and developing chemistry between the receivers and quarterbacks.

While far from a polished product, Robinson saw promising bright spots.

“When we started putting it together in the spring, you could see how they complemented each other and how well they could work together,” Robinson said. “It just grew and took on a life of its own.

“But I give a lot of credit to these guys and the work they’ve done since the spring and they’re both having a great season.”

London set career highs with 127 targets, 83 receptions, 978 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. He did this in just one game over 100 receiving yards – a 12-catch, 154-yard, one-touchdown performance on October 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Moorpark native has posted at least 50 receiving yards in all but three games this season and has had at least five catches in all but five contests.

Mooney is now one of the most explosive receivers in the NFL. He was targeted 101 times and recorded 62 catches for 955 yards and five touchdowns while averaging over 15 yards per catch.

Mooney, 27, has had two games with over 100 receiving yards and seven games with at least 80 receiving yards. He caught passes of at least 30 yards in six contests this season.

London, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 220 pounds, is known more for his size and physicality. At 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, Mooney is a speedy target who stretches the field and knows his way around routes.

The two complement each other well, Robinson said, which has allowed them to thrive alongside each other.

“They did a great job,” Robinson said. “They’re both very, very smart football players.” They love it. They compete. It’s a lot of fun coaching these two guys every day because they give their best and get the best out of everyone. So it’s no surprise that they have such great seasons.

“It’s just a lot of fun to be with them. Like I said, they are so competitive. Probably the two most competitive guys in the building. That obviously shows clearly.”

London and Mooney will attempt to become the first Falcons tandem to surpass 1,000 yards each when the Falcons (8-7) face the Washington Commanders (10-5) at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday at 8:20 p.m .
