Argentine striker Julián Álvarez and substitute Ángel Correa scored twice each, while Marcos Llorente and Antoine Griezmann added to the celebration as Atlético Madrid beat home team Sparta Prague 6-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

It was a confident performance from the Spanish team, who achieved their sixth consecutive win in all competitions with arguably their best performance of the season.

Atlético are ninth in the 36-team Champions League table with nine points from five games, while Sparta Prague are in 28th with four points.

Diego Simeone’s Atleti dominated proceedings at the Letna Stadium from the start, with Alvarez and striker Alexander Sorloth posing a constant threat and combining well in attack.

Sparta Prague’s Kaan Kairinen missed a great early chance after a mistake by Llorente and was penalized as the visitors opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Álvarez curled a free kick from the edge of the box into the top corner.

The Norwegian Sorloth failed to score the second goal when his shot was well parried by goalkeeper Peter Vindahl a few minutes later.

However, Llorente extended the visitors’ lead just before half-time with the help of Sorloth, who played his teammate’s cross with a clever dummy that ended up avoiding everyone, including the goalkeeper, and smashing in at the far post.

Álvarez scored the third goal in the 59th minute, completing a counterattack he started in Atlético’s own half. He played a great one-two with Giuliano Simeone before firing past the goalkeeper.

Griezmann came off the bench and, following an assist from Llorente, scored the visitors’ fourth goal in the 70th minute with a neat finish from inside the box before Correa struck twice late from inside the box to secure the easy win.

“A great game, lots of goals, so I’m very happy. We needed it,” Álvarez told Movistar Plus. “I was confident I would score with that free kick. I think it was a great goal that opened the game and helped us keep winning.”

“It was a matter of time and minutes until all the pieces came together. Little by little the entire team is doing better. We have to continue on this path and keep working. The group is doing very well, so we are striving for more.”
