Atlético Madrid 3-1 Slovan Bratislava: Julian Alvarez scores a stunning goal

A stunning strike from Julian Alvarez and a brace from Antoine Griezmann helped Atletico Madrid to a comfortable victory over Slovan Bratislava.

Former Manchester City striker Alvarez opened the scoring for Diego Simeone’s side in the 16th minute with a superb curling effort from the left side of the penalty area, scoring his fourth Champions League goal of the season.

Griezmann scored the first of his two goals three minutes before half-time after Alvarez’s persistence allowed Marcos Llorente to throw a ball into the box for the Frenchman to nod his head.

The visitors were given a lifeline six minutes after the restart when Clement Lenglet clumsily brought down David Strelec and the striker sent Jan Oblak the wrong way from the resulting penalty.

However, six minutes later, Griezmann scored his second goal with a deflected shot that bounced over the leg of visiting goalkeeper Dominik Takac.

Before he was substituted, the 33-year-old striker had the chance to score a brilliant hat-trick, but his angled shot ended up in the arms of Takac.

Slovan almost hit the goal again, but a nice save from Oblak diverted Siemens Voet’s powerful shot onto the post.

Simeone’s side, who have won 10 games in a row in all competitions, have moved up to ninth place in the league stage – but are just a point behind Bayer Leverkusen in second.

Slovakian club Slovan are at the bottom of the table as they remain without a point after six games.
