A cause of death for Aubrey PlazaHusband, director Jeff Baenawas revealed.

According to documents reviewed by a medical examiner Us weeklyThe official cause of death is Baena’s suicide. The same medical records indicate that an examination has been carried out and his body can be returned to the family. At the time of publication, the case status remains listed as open, although a cause of death has been determined.

No other reasons or significant circumstances surrounding Baena’s death were listed.

Baena died on Friday, January 3, at the age of 47, according to the same court records seen by Us. Until now, the circumstances of his death were unknown.

Baena leaves behind 40-year-old Plaza, who has not yet commented publicly on her husband’s death. Us asked me for a comment.

Baena and Plaza began dating in 2011 and officially tied the knot in 2020 after a decade together. The couple kept their relationship largely private, but Plaza opened up about her and Baena’s wedding during a December 2021 appearance in US Magazine Ellen Degeneres Show.

“A lot has happened for me during COVID. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” Plaza recalled at the time. “One evening we were a bit bored. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. This is real, look it up.”

“I quickly created a love altar in our garden. Facts of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.”

While both Baena and Plaza have each had their own successful solo careers, they have been able to collaborate on numerous projects including Life after Beth, The Little Hours And Turn me around.

“She’s great. I would work with her if she wasn’t my wife, but luckily she is my wife,” Baena told Reel Talker about possibly working with his wife in August 2022. “The opportunity to do something creative (together) where we are both fulfilled – how rare is that?”

Months before Baena’s death, Plaza had briefly spoken about her marriage during an appearance in September 2024 Howard Stern Show. “I would stay away from dating actors,” she joked at the time. “I am married to a writer/director. I’ve never really dated an actor (or been with an actor for a long time).”

She added: “I think about it and I’m like, ‘Oh God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or ‘I don’t want to do that.'” But sometimes I see there are so many acting couples and you think : “Wow, look at her. You really have to laugh about that.'”
