Auburn basketball dominates Memphis and wins the Maui Invitational

MAUI, Hawaii – National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome and No. 3 Auburn won the Maui Invitational championship with a 90-76 win over Memphis on Wednesday at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Broome and fellow forward Dylan Cardwell dominated Penny Hardaway’s Tigers (6-1). Broome had 21 points, 16 rebounds and six assists and four blocks, while Cardwell scored 18 points and had three rebounds and six assists.

The defeat was reminiscent of last season’s Battle 4 Atlantis, in which Memphis defeated Michigan and Arkansas before losing by 16 to Villanova. The Tigers beat No. 2 UConn on Monday and then beat Michigan State on Tuesday.

But Memphis ran into a buzzsaw in Broome and Auburn. The closest Memphis had a lead in the second half was 13 points (12:17 to play).

Auburn (7-0) has wins over four top-30 teams in the KenPom rankings, including Houston, Iowa State and North Carolina. Auburn is ranked #1 by KenPom.

Memphis star PJ Haggerty finished with an outstanding individual performance, scoring 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Tyrese Hunter was one of the tournament’s best players after the first two days, averaging 24.5 points and shooting 60% from the 3-point line. But Auburn neutralized Hunter and held him scoreless in the first half. He scored 11 goals in the second half. Colby Rogers and Dain Dainja also reached double figures with 15 and 15, respectively.

Memphis will face Louisiana Tech again on Dec. 4 (7 p.m., ESPN+) at FedExForum.

Memphis guard Colby Rogers, whose participation in today’s game against Auburn was questionable after he slipped and apparently injured his leg in Tuesday’s game, played the first seven minutes. He spent the next five minutes at the end of the Tigers bench, but returned to the pitch after the under-8s’ media timeout.
