Auburn football is becoming the favorite to sign Stanford QB Ashton Daniels

The transfer portal has officially opened and Auburn is working quickly to address several key needs ahead of the 2025 season.

Quarterbacks Hank Brown and Holden Geriner have entered the transfer portal, and Auburn is linked to several experienced backups like USC’s Miller Moss and Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold. However, a report from On3’s Steve Wiltfong suggests that Hugh Freeze and a former Stanford quarterback are showing mutual interest.

According to Wiltfong, Auburn has caught the attention of former Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels. So much so that Wiltfong has made a prediction in favor of Auburn signing him.

In a recent interview with On3, Daniels told Wiltfong that several schools had contacted him, but Auburn had his top attention. Daniels feels like he can step in quickly and make a difference in the Tigers’ offense.

“I love what Coach (Hugh) Freeze is doing with the culture and I think I can step in and be a spark for the young guys and get them going,” Daniels said.

How does Daniels fit in at Auburn?

Daniels was a solid dual-threat quarterback for the Cardinals in three seasons. He completed 60.8% of his passes for 3,986 yards and 21 touchdowns with 1,121 yards on the ground and another nine scores. In 2024, he threw for 1,700 yards and 10 scores while also throwing for a career-best 669 yards.

His downside is his tendency to turn the ball over. He threw 12 interceptions in 2024, one more than his touchdown total, and 20 picks in the past three seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, Daniels threw 16 “turnover-worthy” passes in 2024 and 12 were intercepted.

However, most of his turnovers could be related to Stanford’s poor pass blocking. On 330 dropbacks, Davis was pressured 125 times, resulting in 40 scrambles and 20 sacks. According to PFF, Stanford’s pass blocking averaged a grade of 62.1 this season and has only topped 80.0 three times.

Could a change of scenery and an improved offensive line boost Davis’ playmaking abilities?
