Auburn is No. 1 in the rankings with the loss at Tennessee

Auburn forward Johni Broome (4) attempts a three-point shot over South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles (30) during the second half at Colonial Life Arena.

For the first time in over a month, there is a change at the top of the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll. However, it’s a classic case of good news and bad news for the new No. 1 team.

Auburn takes over the top spot after surviving an upset at South Carolina over the weekend. The Tigers pick up 25 of 31 first-place votes this week and are on top for the first time since January 2022. Unfortunately, they will be without star striker Johni Broome for a while due to an ankle injury. It is the first time Auburn has been ranked No. 1 since January 31, 2022.

The rest of the top five looks different, too, with former No. 1 Tennessee tumbling due to its decisive midweek loss at Florida. Iowa State climbs to No. 2 after picking up an overtime win at Texas Tech over the weekend. The Cyclones receive five No. 1 votes and are in second place for the first time since December 14, 2015. Duke moves up one notch to No. 3 and Florida moves up four spots to No. 4 thanks to its big win over the Volunteers. Alabama remains in 5th place. Tennessee, which beat Texas on the road on Saturday, retains first place but falls back to 6th place overall.
