Auburn QB Walker White plans to enter the transfer portal

AUBURN – Auburn first-year quarterback Walker White intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed to On3’s Pete Nakos. White redshirted during his first season at Auburn, playing in the second half of the Tigers’ win against UL Monroe.

White was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024. He was the No. 86 overall player in the country, the No. 7 quarterback and the No. 3 player in the state of Arkansas according to the On3 Industry Rankings.

What does it mean?

White was brought in with high expectations. The Tigers received his commitment to Clemson in February of the 2024 recruiting cycle. White played in one game in 2024, showcasing his running ability while completing two of five passes for 18 yards. Auburn landed Jackson Arnold in the portal and should land another quarterback. The Tigers also have five-star quarterback Deuce Knight arriving soon. Impact on departure: Minor

After Auburn’s Iron Bowl loss to Alabama, head coach Hugh Freeze addressed how aggressive the Tigers could be moving forward in the portal.

“Well, we’re going to try to sign the best high school class we can first on Wednesday,” Freeze said. “And then it’s very difficult to answer that because as you know, you don’t even have any idea what your squad will look like in a week. Therefore it is a bit difficult to answer. But the first priority is that we start this signing class next Wednesday and then we’ll see what’s next from there.”

Freeze said the combination of trying to retain his roster and recruiting in the portal creates real uncertainty during the process.

“It’s hard to say – I mean, you’re optimistic about everything we’ve done, but how the hell do you really know in this day and age? We just have to work until the end. The good thing about it is, as I mentioned, there is also a portal that opens if you don’t get everyone you wanted,” Freeze said.

“I said I wanted to try to progress through high school, but I just can’t keep up with it anymore. Really, I’m a bit removed from the social media world and when someone doesn’t tell me, I have a hard time even keeping up. But I feel pretty good about most of our relationships. But again, you never really know.

“We have a top 10 class and hopefully we can win another one next week. We have to go back and try to finish it and then enter the portal to make sure we don’t feel like this next year.”
