Australian Open 2025 results: Jodie Burrage secures emotional victory in Melbourne after long injury problems

With her powerful groundstrokes and strong first serve, Burrage had too many weapons for the 149th-ranked Jeanjean, a performance that exuded confidence.

The British number seven played aggressively and did particular damage with her forehand, scoring 23 winners.

After securing victory on her first match point with a giant net, Burrage immediately covered her face with her hands.

The British fans in the crowd roared their approval before Burrage returned to her chair and spent a few moments sobbing under a towel.

Burrage said afterward that she had trouble eating breakfast because of her pregame nerves.

“All of those emotions from the last nine months, I think, were in there,” she said.

“I think because I know I played good tennis, I know what a good opportunity today was.”

“I knew how much hard work had been done over the last year.”

Burrage first considered quitting the sport in 2020 after a series of injuries, but fought her way back and celebrated the greatest successes of her career.

Her first Grand Slam victory came at Wimbledon in 2023, leading to a memorable second-round appearance on Center Court, while she also won the first round of this year’s US Open.

Burrage was in 84th place of her career when her progress was stalled again.

In February she had surgery for a torn tendon in her wrist – the fourth operation of her career – and in April she suffered another setback as she prepared to return to competition.

Burrage tore ankle ligaments while training with British number 1 Katie Boulter and although she did not require surgery, she missed a further 10 weeks.

After making her comeback on the lower ITF Futures Tour, she burst into tears during a training session and wondered if the hardships had been worth it.

However, she persevered and is now the first British woman to win this year’s Australian Open in singles.
