Learner Tien’s upset of Daniil Medvedev was one of the most unexpected results in recent Australian Open history.

Medvedev reached three of the last four finals in Melbourne and took part in six Grand Slam finals on hard courts.

Tien’s win opened the top half of the men’s singles in favor of Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner.

Fritz scored his second straight win at the tournament on Thursday. He is one of three seeded players remaining in his quarter of the draw.

Sinner, the top seed, needed four sets to reach the third round. The Italian is on a collision course to face Australian Alex De Minaur in the quarter-finals.

Fritz and Tien are five of six American men still in the draw. Five of them are in the top half of the draw. Three of these players are unseeded. Fritz could play No. 21 seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round if both win in the third round.
