Australian Open LIVE: Disgruntled Nick Kyrgios loses to Britain’s Jacob Fearnley as Novak Djokovic battles teenage wildcard

Novak Djokovic is training for the 2025 Australian Open with Andy Murray as coach

At the Australian Open, Brit Jacob Fearnley will face the returning Nick Kyrgios, while Novak Djokovic will play his first match under coach Andy Murray in Melbourne.

Kyrgios has not played in his home Grand Slam tournament for three years due to injury and will face rising star Fearnley, who shot up the rankings last season and qualified for the Australian Open for the first time.

All eyes were on Djokovic’s new partnership with Murray as the 37-year-old began his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title against American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy.

British number 1 Jack Draper survived a scare against Argentina’s Mariono Navone as the 23-year-old fought from two sets down to reach the second round. Draper, who missed most of the preseason with a hip injury, held his own physically throughout the distance and the 15th seed prevailed in five sets.

Previously there were wins for Jannik Sinner, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, but Stefanos Tsitsipas is out and there was an emotional win for Jodie Burrage.

Huge stop from Fearnley! Between all the mockery he finds a good enough second serve as Kyrgios fires the return into the net.

Gulp. Another big game for Fearnley, especially between 15 and 30. Kyrgios made a big swing with his forehand and it seemed like he was going to intervene until he just fell silent at the last moment.

Kyrgios goes for another forehand winner at 30-30 but misses. Fearnley is drawn into a tackle as Fearnley stretches his backhand. Devil.

Uh! Fearnley applauds as Kyrgios fires a beautiful volley into the net, then Fearnley misses the forehand and gives Krygios the set point!

SAVED! Fearnley stays calm, finds the first serve and places the forehand winner behind Kyrgios after he moves to the other side of the court.

Over at Rod Laver Arena, the mood changed again as Novak Djokovic took the early break and Nishesh Basavareddy struggled after receiving treatment between sets.

The alarm bells were ringing but up to that point it was a brilliant performance from Basavareddy. Djokovic has improved his level since falling behind.

I’m sure Jacob Fearnley expected this from the start when he was scheduled to face Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open.

The subdued crowd is now much more hostile, cheering the Scot’s errors and misses. This will be a huge success if he gets through this set now.

Fearnley shakes off a forehand miss and finds the winner, then keeps his cool and slams a forehand winner. AS! Just what he needed to hold on.

BREAK! Wow. The John Cain Arena explodes as Kyrgios finds the break out of nowhere. Moments that test Fearnley. The home crowd begins to cheer missed serves and the Scot begins to feel some pressure.

At Deuce, Fearnley went in but fired an easy volley into the net. Kyrgios then took advantage of his chance and now hits the ball much more cleanly. There’s still a long way to go but Kyrgios has found something and Fearnley has to get through it.

But wait. There is some pressure now as Fearnley double-faults on the opening point and the Kyrgios fans cheer.

Fearnley responds with a huge ace, but a forehand error follows and Kyrgios finds inspiration out of nowhere. He pushes Fearnley back onto the backhand and blocks the volley.

Break point and a test from Fearnley here. Saved. The body impact is enough and Kyrgios cannot return. Another first serve – Kyrgios sends the return wide.

Kyrgios finally found something and hits the forehand winner to return to the deuce. Key game, that.

Kyrgios continues to fight and is causing quite a stir with his serve at the John Cain Arena. But Fearnley keeps control of it with the break. To be honest, he hasn’t faced any pressure on his serve since the first set. The Scot was dominant in the rallies.
