Avalanche signed Tye Felhaber to a two-year contract

The Avalanche have added more depth up front Tye Felhaber According to a club announcement, he has a two-year contract that runs for this season and next. Financial details were not disclosed, although it is believed to be a two-way deal for the minor league journeyman.

It is unclear whether Felhaber will clear waivers later today or whether the signing will also mark the 26-year-old’s first NHL call-up. However, today’s news does not mark his first contract signing in the NHL. The former OHL All-Star signed an entry-level contract with the Stars as an undrafted free agent in 2019 after lighting up the major-junior scene in his over-age season, recording 109 points in 68 games with the Ottawa 67’s and The playoffs led the league in goals with 17 in 18 games.

However, Felhaber was unable to convert this production into something meaningful on a professional level. He scored just eight goals and 18 points in 86 appearances for the Stars’ AHL affiliate over parts of three seasons before they traded him to the Lightning midway through the final season of his contract. Tampa Bay understandably chose not to extend him a qualifying offer after his contract expired, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Ontario native has since plied his trade on minor league deals. After being non-tendered, he signed an ECHL contract with the Fort Wayne Komets, and retiring from competition proved wise for his development. Felhaber scored a blast of 63 points in 51 games, which helped him restore his confidence on offense and land more successful minutes in subsequent AHL games with Milwaukee and Colorado. He played in a top-nine position for the Avalanche’s primary affiliate this season and led the team with eight goals in 23 appearances.

The Avalanche have an open roster spot, so no action would be required to retain Felhaber for now. He could accompany the Avs on their road trip and make his NHL debut tomorrow in Vancouver.
