Baker Mayfield throws five touchdowns in the Panthers’ 48-14 win

Buccaneers fans will be big Commanders fans on Sunday night.

Baker Mayfield threw five touchdowns and the Buccaneers posted a 48-14 home victory over the Panthers that will make them scorekeepers later in the day. If the Commanders beat the Falcons in Sunday’s nightcap, the Bucs can win the NFC South by beating the Saints in Week 18.

If the Falcons prevail, the Bucs will need a win and a rebound from the Panthers against Atlanta in the regular season finale.

It is the second time in Mayfield’s career that he has thrown five touchdowns, but the first time he has done so in a Bucs jersey. He’s now at 39 this season, tied with Lamar Jackson for second to Joe Burrow in this year’s league.

Mayfield finished with 359 passing yards, giving him a career-high 4,279 passing yards and a chance to increase both totals next weekend.

The first two touchdown passes went to Mike Evans, who now has 105 in his career. Evans caught a total of eight passes for 97 yards and now needs 85 yards next week to extend his streak of 1,000-yard receiving seasons to 11 in a row. That seemed unlikely since Evans missed three games earlier this season with a hamstring injury, but given the mood he and Mayfield were in on Sunday, it seems like a good bet.

Running back Bucky Irving chipped in 190 yards from scrimmage and the Bucs totaled 551 yards of offense on Sunday.

They hope the Commanders can have the same success later on Sunday and that the Saints defense offers as little resistance in Week 18 as the Panthers did this Sunday.
