Bars prepare for a 13-year rivalry game

Bars in Austin prepared weeks in advance for Texas and Texas A&M fans who didn’t travel to Kyle Field.

One of college football’s most historic rivalries has existed for 13 years. 105 miles from Kyle Field, Austin bars ensured those who stayed local were prepared for the chaos.

“The week before, we mentally prepare for the crowd and the energy because everything is high,” said bartender at Lestre Pearl East, Danielle Chavez.

At around 3 p.m. the fans came to the bars to prepare for this historic duel.

“Excited and nervous because there is so much on the line with the winner going to the SEC championship game,” A&M graduate Ed Sharp said.

“A lot of people have been waiting for this game. It’s just a good experience. The rivalry that comes with it. There’s so much history behind the game,” said former UT basketball player Kristopher Clack.

Chavez said the week of the game was about dealing with the crowd.

“We have everything in stock twice. We make juices double, triple,” she said. “Everyone arrives an hour before the game and is ready to go.”

She said people continued to report until the game was over.

“I think there will be a line out the door all night,” Chavez said.
