“Batman 2” has been delayed again by a year and will now be released in theaters on October 1, 2027.

Matt Reeves’ 2022 sequel to The Batman was originally scheduled to hit theaters in October 2025 and was pushed back a year before this latest delay in March 2024. If this date holds, it will be five years before Robert Pattinson becomes the Dark Knight.

James Gunn, the co-CEO of the new DCU, responded in Threads to a user who was concerned about the time between films, saying: “To be fair, a gap of 5 years or more is pretty common for sequels . 7 years between Alien.” and Aliens. 14 years between the first two Terminators. And of course 6 years between the first two 3.”

We don’t know much about this highly anticipated sequel, but Reeves has confirmed that Colin Farrell will be returning as The Penguin after his time in the Max series of the same name. We also know that it will exist outside of the larger DCU and be set in its own Batman Epic Crime Saga.

Those who were looking forward to going to the cinema on October 2, 2026 will be happy to know that the currently untitled project from Alejandro González Iñárritu and Tom Cruise will take the place of The Batman 2. This film, which also stars Sandra Hülser, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Riz Ahmed, follows the events when “the most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is the… “Savior of humanity” before the catastrophe he unleashes destroys everything.
