Bayern and Leipzig coaches shocked after incident in Magdeburg

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany and RB Leipzig colleague Marco Rose struggled to talk about Bayern’s 5-1 win on Friday, and a planned Christmas party at the Allianz Arena was canceled after it was held at a market in eastern Germany City of Magdeburg a car drove into the crowd.

Authorities described the incident as a deliberate attack. It happened about an hour before the start of the Bundesliga game, leaving at least two people dead and 60 others injured.

“It’s almost impossible to talk about football tonight. At the moment our thoughts are with the people in Magdeburg,” said Kompany.

“Hopefully there will be peace at some point, not just in Germany but everywhere. We won today, but I hope there will be more victories for peace next year.”

The two people confirmed dead were an adult and an infant. However, officials said further deaths could not be ruled out as 15 people were seriously injured.

“I heard the news from Magdeburg, it puts everything in a different light,” said Rose.

“Yes, we played football. Yes, we clearly and deservedly lost. Benjamin Henrichs has a serious ankle injury, but a few other things happened today that weren’t nice.”

Bayern’s originally planned Christmas party after the Leipzig game was canceled.

Bayern board chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen called on fans in the Allianz Arena to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the Magdeburg victims.

“We had completely different ideas about me standing here,” Bayern managing director Jan-Christian Dreesen told the players and fans.

“We found out about the events in Magdeburg during the game. That’s why we decided to forego the Christmas party. I would like to ask you to remember the relatives.”

On the pitch the game got off to an exceptional start as Jamal Musiala gave Bayern the lead after 28 seconds, with Benjamin Sesco equalizing just over a minute later.

However, Bayern then dominated and led 3-1 at half-time thanks to Konrad Laimar and Joshua Kimmich, before Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies completed the defeat and gave them a seven-point lead at the top of the table.
