Bayern Munich 0-1 Bayer Leverkusen: Nathan Tella scores in the DFB Cup

Nathan Tella scored as German Cup winners Bayer Leverkusen secured their place in the quarter-finals after beating rivals Bayern Munich.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 17th minute when veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off after rushing out of his goal and colliding with the onrushing Jeremie Frimpong.

Despite the overpayer’s advantage, Leverkusen had to wait until the 69th minute to take the lead through former Burnley and Southampton attacker Tella.

A magnificent cross from Alex Grimaldo into the penalty area was first met by Tella and flew past Bayern’s substitute goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

However, Vincent Kompany’s team, who had to make do without the injured top scorer Harry Kane, had their chances.

Defender Dayot Upamecano came agonizingly close to equalizing, but his header towards the far post went wide.

Kingsley Coman rose highest to meet Joshua Kimmich’s corner but was unable to direct his header on target, while Kim Min-jae also headed weakly wide just before half-time.

Xabi Alonso is yet to lose in the German Cup, having won his eighth straight game in the competition as Leverkusen coach, while 20-time winners Bayern have not won the cup since 2020.
