BCB announces squad for ODI series against West Indies

DHAKA, December 2, 2024 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) today announced the squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies without some key players.

Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan failed to make room in the squad while captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, senior batter Mushfiqur Rahim and key midfielder Towhid Hridy were unavailable due to their respective injuries.

As BCB president Faruque Ahmed previously stated, “Shakib did not seem to be in the mental state to contribute to the team at the highest level,” the all-rounder’s fate was already sealed before the squad was officially announced.

However, Faruque said Shakib still has a chance to play in next year’s Champions Trophy after which the all-rounder is expected to opt out of the ODI format. But the West Indies Series is Bangladesh’s last ODI game before the global tournament.

After completing his maiden captaincy in the Test series, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz will now lead the Bangladesh team in ODIs for the first time in the absence of Najmul Hossain Shanto, the board said while announcing the team.

Shanto is still recovering from a groin injury he sustained during the ODI series against Afghanistan last month.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s absence was due to a finger injury which he also sustained during the same series.

Towhid Hridoy, a stalwart of the Bangladesh middle order in white-ball cricket, has also been declared unavailable by the BCB medical team as he is battling groin problems.

“Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin and subsequent examinations confirmed the presence of an illness,” said BCB sports doctor Monzur Hossain Chowdhury.

“He has been given rest and we will examine him again in two weeks to see if he is ready to play,” he added.

Meanwhile, left-arm batsman Afif Hossain Dhrubo has been called up to the ODI squad after a year’s break. His last ODI match for Bangladesh came in December 2023.

Fellow left-hander Zakir Hasan, who was in the team for the ODI series against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates last month, has been dropped.

But fast bowler Nahid Rana retained his place after impressing on his ODI debut against the same opposition.

Bangladesh’s three ODIs against West Indies are scheduled for December 8, 10 and 12. All games will take place at Warner Park, Basseterre in St. Kitts. The ODI series will be followed by three T20 Internationals.

Bangladesh Squad: Mehidy Hasan Miraz (Captain), Liton Das (WK), Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Soumya Sarkar, Parvez Hossain Emon, Mahmudullah Riyad, Jaker Ali Anik, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud , Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana
